Why volunteer remotely

Through remote volunteering, Australians are supporting organisations overseas to achieve their development goals without the need to travel.

Remote volunteering helps create change

The Australian Volunteers Program’s remote volunteering initiative matches skilled volunteers with organisations in countries across the Pacific, Asia, and Africa to help them achieve their development goals.

A wide range of skills are needed and assignments come in all shapes and sizes. Assignments are tailored to fit the needs of our partner organisations and often suit the lifestyle of our volunteers.

Volunteers and partner organisations receive training, support from dedicated teams in each country, and a modest allowance to help cover the technology costs associated with working remotely.

What is remote volunteering

Learn about remote volunteering, and how Australian volunteers can make a difference from a distance.

What volunteers say

People of all ages, backgrounds and abilities have told us why they became remote volunteers.

  • To gain international experience without the need to relocate
  • An opportunity to share skills in international development projects from home
  • To utilise spare time contributing to meaningful work and skill-sharing
  • A chance to connect and meet new people
  • Because distance is not a barrier to sharing specialised skills and knowledge

New experiences, friendships and skills

Personal and professional growth are important aspects of the volunteer experience and volunteering can also be a great way to boost your career or to share your skills as you finish your formal career.

While undertaking your assignment online you will develop strong connections with your colleagues and learn about their country and culture. These experiences will give you a deeper understanding of how to work across cultures.
