We’re looking for a Visiting Emergency Medicine Registrarwho can live and volunteer for six months in Vanuatu

  • This assignment seeks to contribute and build local capacities for the delivery of safe and effective emergency care to all patients that are seen and managed by the Visiting Emergency Medicine Registrar (VERM) during their assignment, with the ultimate, ideal result of improved patient outcome (death or disability avoided). This is difficult to measure quantitatively, but could be evaluated through patient feedback, expert supervision, and individual patient case studies.
  • To be considered for this role, you’ll need to have qualification in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and be a registered advanced trainee in FACEM Training Program with the ACEM, completed at least Training Stage 1 of new FACEM Training Program
  • You will be working alongside local colleagues and undertake EM teaching, training, and education work in the VCH ED at a senior registrar level, including overseeing patient assessment, diagnosis, resuscitation, treatment, management, referral, and follow-up within local resources constraints. This may involve team leadership and support during resuscitation, leading handovers and ward rounds, clinical decision-making, managing ED patient flow, patient advocacy, and triage supervision.

 About the PartnerOrganisation

VCH Emergency Department (ED) is a large and busy referral center for all people with any illness or injury throughout the City of Port Vila and is the main referral hospital for the whole of Vanuatu.

Many of these patients have life or limb threatening conditions on arrival to ED and require rapid interventions by skilled clinicians to prevent death or disability. VCH ED is a key site of training for nursing and interns and popular with international medical students doing an elective placement. There are always opportunities for teaching with the ED and improving skills and knowledge. Likewise, there are many opportunities to improve ED practice and processes through role-modelling, leadership, quality improvement tasks, research, and ongoing structured medical education activities

Doctors and nurses specifically trained for emergency care are generally very few throughout Vanuatu notably at senior level to educate and build capacities of nurses, interns, and medical officers within ED
