  • Provide technical and strategic support for the development of the Tourism Development Plan

About the Partner Organisation

Birendranagar Municipality, the fast-growing capital of Karnali Province and administrative hub of Surkhet District, was established in 1976. Covering 245 sq.km with 16 wards, it has nearly 154,000 residents and an 87.2% literacy rate, among the highest in the region. Located in the scenic Surkhet Valley, it is well connected by Ratna and Karnali highways and Surkhet Airport, making it a vital trade and transport center. The municipality invests over NPR 4 billion annually in infrastructure, health, education, and tourism, while promoting social initiatives like the “One Home, One Woman Employment” campaign. Birendranagar Municipality has great potential for tourism, which can play an important role in its economic growth. The municipality is already known for its 12th-century temples, a national heritage site, and its beautiful wetland areas. A long-term tourism development plan will help the municipality plan its investments, support local businesses, and create more jobs for local people. Therefore, the municipality seeks support from an Australian volunteer to identify tourism opportunities, develop a long-term plan and promotion strategies, and prepare an implementation plan. A volunteer with tourism expertise can play an important role by helping the municipality through research-based approach to develop and promote a responsible and sustainable tourism plan. This will also help build the capacity of the local government, in partnership with the tourism sector, to effectively implement the plan.
