A message from James Gilling, Australia’s new Humanitarian Coordinator.
I am very pleased to take up the position of Australia’s Humanitarian Coordinator at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I am especially pleased that part of my job includes the oversight of our Australian Volunteers Program. For as long as I have been involved in development cooperation – which is all my working life – I have seen the incredible impact volunteers can have, working together with communities around the world. I look forward to building a close relationship with the program.
I come to my new role from DFAT’s Office of the Pacific where I managed the bilateral division. Heads of mission across the Pacific region often reminded me of the wonderful work of our volunteers, so I am keen to see some of this activity at first hand in my new job.
I am looking forward to working with many of you as you engage in returned volunteer network activities, such as the Make an Impact – International Volunteering Conference in Melbourne at the end of March. I will be hosting a session on the impact volunteering has on locally-led development – something I, and I know many of you, feel strongly about.
