We’re looking for a Library Systems and Capacity Development Mentor who can live and volunteer for 8 months in Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
- This assignment seeks to develop and implement a modern library management system for Martin Luther Seminary that enhances accessibility, organisation, and preservation of its 16,000-item theological collection.
- To be considered for this role, you’ll need a Degree in Library and Information Science, Information Management, or a related field.
- As a volunteer, you will mentor and coach library staff to strengthen their confidence and technical capacity to operate and maintain the system independently.
About the Partner Organisation
The Lutheran University of Papua New Guinea (LUPNG) is a newly established private higher education institution owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea. Officially recognised in 2022 through an Act of Parliament and certified by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), LUPNG operates from its head office at Ampo in Lae, with campuses in Lae, Madang, and Banz. The University was formed through the amalgamation of four long-standing institutions - Balob Teachers College, Martin Luther Seminary, the Lutheran School of Nursing, and Lutheran Church College Banz - each with decades of experience in delivering quality education and training to Papua New Guineans.
LUPNG aims to provide holistic, values-based education that integrates academic excellence with Christian faith and service. We work closely with church bodies, educational institutions, health and community organisations, and local and international partners to foster leadership, character development, and skills that meet the social and spiritual needs of Papua New Guinea and beyond.
A volunteer with expertise in library management and digital systems can provide the much-needed technical knowledge and project leadership to guide this transition. The skills required - such as planning, system design, cataloguing, procurement processes, and integration of software and hardware - are not currently available locally. The volunteer’s support will help establish a sustainable, efficient, and user-friendly library management system that can later be replicated across LUPNG’s campuses.
