We’re looking for a Historian – Exhibition Content Development Mentor volunteer in a hybrid role, both remotely (online) and in-country , for a total of 12 months.
- This assignment seeks tocontribute to the development of exhibition content for AMRT I.P.’s new museum building, garden, and the Museum of the Eternal Flame. The key objectives are to conduct rigorous historical research, accurately interpret sources, and construct a cohesive narrative that reflects the complexity of the Timorese Resistance.
- To be considered for this role, you’ll need a qualification in history, museum studies, or related fields, along with several years of professional experience in historiography, curatorial practice, or exhibition content development.
- You will be working alongside AMRT I.P. staff, including curators, archivists, and government officials, as well as a small interdisciplinary team focused on exhibition design and public engagement.
- As a volunteer, you will support capacity building through mentoring, training, and knowledge transfer in historical research methods, exhibition content development, and narrative construction.
- Participate in planning sessions, consultation meetings, and collaborative workshops to shape exhibition narratives and ensure historical accuracy.
- Provide support in strengthening research practices, developing exhibition content, and integrating documentary, photographic, and oral sources into cohesive storylines.
- Work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through contributing to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting cultural learning, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by safeguarding cultural heritage, and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by preserving and communicating Timor-Leste’s history of resistance and resilience.
About the Partner Organisation
The partner is AMRT, I.P. (Arquivo & Museu da Resistência Timorense, Instituto Público), located in Dili, Timor-Leste.
AMRT, I.P. preserves, curates, and exhibits historical records, collections, and audiovisual materials related to Timor-Leste’s Resistance struggle. It serves as a national institution safeguarding cultural heritage and engaging the public through archives, exhibitions, and educational programs.
The organisation lacks specialised technical expertise in areas such as audiovisual archiving, exhibition content development, and contemporary curatorial practices. A volunteer is needed to build staff capacity, introduce modern museological standards, and ensure that historical materials are properly documented, preserved, and made accessible to the public.

The allowance for the in-country phase is AUD$3305 per month, and the allowance for the remote phase is AUD$79 per month.

Requirements
- All applicants must be Australian citizens or holders of Permanent Residency Visa of Australia, or New Zealand residents in Australia with a Special Category Visa (SCV).
- A National Police Check must be completed during the application process.
- A Psychological Test is required for all volunteer assignments.
Additional requirements for this assignment include First Aid Certificate.
