- This assignment seeks to support and enhance the use of digital pathology and telehealth systems for remote diagnosis and communication with in-country medical teams.
- To be considered for this role, you’ll need a medical degree with specialist qualification in Histopathology (or equivalent recognised certification).
- As a volunteer, you will contribute to upskilling local healthcare staff through feedback, guidance, and collaboration to improve sample collection, slide preparation, and diagnostic understanding.
About the partner organisation
Mustard Seed Global (PNG) is a not-for-profit organisation delivering essential primary healthcare services to remote and underserved communities across Papua New Guinea. Working in some of the country’s most isolated regions, the organisation focuses on reaching populations with limited access to basic health services, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
The organisation’s core aim is to improve health outcomes by providing accessible, community-based healthcare, with a strong focus on early cancer detection, health awareness, and preventative care. Mustard Seed PNG works closely with local communities, health workers, and partners to deliver outreach programs that address critical health needs and promote long-term wellbeing.
A volunteer histopathologist will support this assignment by providing remote diagnostic services, reviewing digitally captured FNAB slides and analysing core biopsy samples sent to Australia. This role cannot be easily filled locally due to the limited availability of specialised pathology expertise and diagnostic infrastructure in PNG, particularly in rural and remote settings. The telehealth model enables critical knowledge transfer while maintaining service continuity.
