We’re looking for a GIS Remote Sensing Mentorwho can live and volunteer for 12 months in Kiribati

  • This assignment seeks to assist with the establishment and population of a centralised GIS database for land records in South Tarawa, as well as building the technical capacity of staff in GIS and Remote Sensing applications.
  • To be considered for this role, you’ll need a Bachelors degree in GIS, Remote Sensing, Geography, Environmental Science or a related field plus certified training or demonstrated proficiency in GIS software (eg QGIS, ArcGIS) and a minimum of 3 years experience in the field.
  • You will be working alongside especially a local GIS Remote Specialist but also with the organisation staff members for this project.

About the Partner Organisation

The Lands Division under the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agricultural Development (MELAD) is the central government body responsible for land administration and management in Kiribati. They operate across the islands of Kiribati, with our main office located in South Tarawa. Their aim is to ensure the sustainable, fair, and efficient management of land resources for the people of Kiribati. They work closely with landowners, local communities, and other government agencies to manage land tenure, resolve disputes, and maintain critical land records. Facing challenges such as coastal erosion, sea-level rise, and population pressure, their future goals are to modernize their land records through digital mapping and GIS technology. This will enable them to make informed decisions for climate resilience, urban planning, and the sustainable development of their limited land resources. The volunteer will support staff to ensure this work continues successfully.
