We’re looking for a Forest Fire Management Mentor who can live and volunteer for 12 months in Bhutan.

  • This assignment seeks to develop a nationwide forest fire fuel type model and hotspot mapping
  • To be considered for this role, you’ll need Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Forest Fire Ecology or Remote sensing or 10 year equivalent in experience
  • As a volunteer, you will enhance the capacity of the forest fire management section of the department.

About the Partner Organisation

The Department of Forests and Park Services comprises four functional divisions. It oversees 24 field offices across Bhutan, including 10 protected areas and 14 divisional forest offices. The Forest Fire and Pest Management Section, under the Forest Resources Planning and Management Division, is responsible for managing forest fires and pests, developing SOPs, coordinating prescribed burns, and supporting district-level fire plans. It also leads national awareness campaigns and oversees the procurement of firefighting equipment. Bhutan has recently been experiencing an increasing trend in widespread forest fires particularly during dry winter months, leading to a significant impact on the environment, forested areas and inhabitants (human and wildlife) of the affected areas. Currently, there is a lack of expertise in remote sensing and forest fire ecology in the country. An experienced and highly skilled Australian volunteer would be valuable in guiding the overall forest fire management efforts and would greatly enhance and elevate forest fire management in the country.
