We’re looking for a Legislative Mentor who can live and volunteer for 12 months in the Federated States of Micronesia.
- This assignment seeks to ensure the Legislative Framework is reviewed and strengthened and that the new laws are clear, enforceable, and aligned with contemporary governance and development needs.
- To be considered for this role, you’ll need Tertiary Qualifications in Law or Legislative/Policy drafting reform as well as demonstrated experience in legislative review, statutory drafting, or law reform within a government or public-sector context.
- As a volunteer, you will support the team with the modernization of the legal framework of Yap State to ensure it is resilient and responsive to both present and future needs.
About the Partner Organisation
The Office of the Attorney General is the principal legal office of the Yap State Government, Federated States of Micronesia working primarily from Colonia in Yap State. It provides legal advice and representation to the Governor, the Legislature, executive departments, and statutory agencies of Yap State.
The office works closely with the Yap State Legislature, executive agencies, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to ensure reforms are legally sound, culturally appropriate, and respectful of Yapese customs and traditions.
A legislative specialist volunteer will be able to provide technical expertise in statutory review, legislative drafting, and legal organization that is currently limited within Yap State. The volunteer would assist with reviewing existing laws, establishing a structured filing and tracking system, supporting code commission contractors, as well as helping to draft proposed amendments for transmission to the Legislature.

Allowance
We cover your flights, insurance, and provide a living and accommodation allowance. Learn more here
The allowance for the in-country phase is AUD$ 2,200 per month.

Requirements
- All applicants must be Australian citizens or holders of Permanent Residency Visa of Australia, or New Zealand residents in Australia with a Special Category Visa (SCV).
- A National Police Check must be completed during the application process.
- A Psychological Test is required for all volunteer assignments.
Additional requirements for this assignment include providing or attaining a First Aid Certificate.
