Tonga is an archipelago of coral and volcanic islands in the
South Pacific. The only monarchy in the region, Tonga was never
formerly colonised by western powers. Once a British protectorate,
it has been part of the Commonwealth of Nations since 1970.
While agriculture, fishing & tourism are the main
industries, there is also a dependence on remittances from the
substantial number of Tongans working overseas.
AVI's current involvement in Tonga is via the Pacific Technical
Assistance Mechanism (PACTAM).
