Engineering, Architecture & Skilled Trades
Latest assignments available
Architecture
AVI volunteer architects have worked on a range of different projects, from designing universities and schools, to community centres or theatres.
Related roles, such as draftspersons, urban planners and land use planners are also called for.
Engineering
Engineers are often involved in water and sanitation projects, to develop counterpart skills in water and sanitation technologies, advise on improvements to water and sanitation facilities, and assist communities access resources.
Skilled Trades
AVI is asked to find a number of skilled tradespeople for a range of roles. While there is often a ready supply of skilled tradespeople in our partner countries, there is sometimes a need for general or specific trades or trades training skills that cannot be met locally.
All assignments involve passing on skills to local people and encouraging good practices. It's more a matter of working alongside and building skills than of getting in to finish a job - though this is often needed too.
From early 2011 we will be looking for tradespeople in many areas to help vocational training organisations, to start from July 2011 onwards. These roles will be mostly in Namibia or Solomon Islands. There may be opportunities for builders, carpenters, bricklayers, electricians, mechanics, and agriculture trainers.
As an example of other types of roles, construction supervisors are often required to manage a construction site (e.g. rebuilding of a school) and the training of a local counterpart to eventually take over all or part of this role. Such roles are increasingly common in areas where major rebuilding works are required.
