Lawyers Beyond Borders

Since establishing Lawyers Beyond Borders in 2009, AVI has worked in partnership with many inspiring legal professionals and partner organisations to respond to local needs and build the capacity of organisations and people across the world.
Lawyers Beyond Borders is being redesigned, and we want to share with you the changes we’re making to the program in order to re-focus our efforts into what we see as the most important areas to be working in.
Lawyers Beyond Borders has played an important role in providing new opportunities to work in the areas of law and justice in international development, but after reviewing the program, we are now working to re-shape it to further deliver services to partner organisations overseas.
This means that there will be some changes to the way the program operates, including changes to our existing membership system.
We are no longer accepting membership applications, as we believe these networking opportunities and this information should be available to all interested parties – not just members.
We have also incorporated lawyersbeyondborders.com into the larger australianvolunteers.com website, and it’s here that you will find an information-rich guide to being involved in working with Lawyers Beyond Borders.

I’m an existing member. Where does my membership fee go?
Firstly, thank you for your support.
Your membership fee has enabled Lawyers Beyond Borders to work with people like you and partner organisations to work on pressing issues within the international law and justice sector.
Some of the achievements of the program to date have been:
- Establishing a long-term partnership with ANZ, including the ANZ/AVI Super Regional Volunteers program, which sees ANZ staff volunteering with a partner organisation, to support organisational capacity building.
- Formalising an ongoing collaboration with Transparency International (TI), which has seen volunteers working with TI in the Pacific region. TI is now working on funding for advocacy and legal centres in the Pacific.
- Working to combat corruption in Botswana through placing a volunteer at the Directorate for Corruption and Economic Crime.
- Working with the International Association for Defence Counsel in Papua New Guinea to develop a training program around bribery and corruption in PNG. The program will also involve the Legal Training Centre, Legal Aid and the Law Society of PNG.
None of this would have been possible without you – again, thank you.
