Timor conference focuses on the power of participation

The Timor-Leste community of Lospalos will focus on sustainable development as part of the Participation is Power Forum to held on 11-13 July 2011 in Motalori, Lospalos, Timor-Leste.

Run by local organisations CTKDS, Verupu-Puk, Discusaun Café Maubere with the support of Australian organisations East Timor Women Australia (ETWA), Mornington Shire Friends of Lospalos, Borderlands Cooperative and Australian Volunteers International, the event aims to explore and enable communities to work towards sustainable and culturally appropriate rural development in Timor-Leste.

A team of 20 young volunteers, with ages ranging from 15-25 years are key organisers of the event, which expects to attract over 600 participants. Their role includes working with local communities and undertaking a range of event management tasks.

Conference participants will be treated to practical workshops, prominent speakers and change-focused discussion spotlighting sustainable agriculture, land and environmental protection, culture, preventative health and alternative economics, will help communicate important messages to promote sustainable development. Other activities include participatory art, documentary film screenings, open mic sessions, cultural workshops and visits to local and sacred sites.

Due to enormous community interest and resulting extra expense, event organisers are seeking further contributions with a total value of USD$3,000.00.

This will facilitate:

  • Cultural performances and participatory arts activities
  • Multi-media training for youth to document activities and outcomes
  • Transport and participation of rural community members from across the Lautem district
