Australian Volunteers International's Information Session is coming to Bunbury to give the community a chance to hear the stories of local returned volunteers that have volunteered overseas.

AVI will be holding an information session on Wednesday, 28 October from 6pm at the Edith Cowan University, Building 6 room 102, Robertson Drive in Bunbury.

According to AVI marketing and communications manager, Christine Crosby, the information session will give Bunbury residents and beyond a way to meet returned volunteers and to find out how they can live and work with developing communities in Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.

"Since AVI started its volunteer programs nearly 60 years ago more than 35 people from the Bunbury region have shared their skills, knowledge and expertise with communities in over 18 countries around the globe," she said. "Among them are midwives, information system experts, primary teachers and environmental lawyers.

"The first Bunbury resident to volunteer with AVI was a horticulturalist based Ministry of Agriculture in Malaysia in 1979. Since then people from the Bunbury region have worked in countries including Botswana, the Marshall Islands, Jordan, Cambodia and Vanuatu."

AVI will be recruiting skilled professionals for more than 100 international volunteer placements as part of its recruitment drive starting 17 October 2009. All positions will be advertised on AVI's website during the drive.

Assignments are up to two years. All volunteers received airfares, visas, insurance, a modest living and accommodation allowance, pre-departure training, in-country and post-assignment support.
