Expressions of interest sought for Mindibungu Aboriginal Corporation - Mechanic

Mindibungu Aboriginal Corporation (Mindi) is seeking a mechanic to work in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Expressions of interest sought:

•    to live and work in a remote Western Australian community
•    to operate the community’s mechanical workshop as a business
•    guaranteed income plus the opportunity for expansion

Mindibungu Aboriginal Corporation (Mindi) is the administration arm of Billiluna, a remote indigenous community with a population of approximately 220. The community is located in the East Kimberley of Western Australia, which is 175 km south of Halls Creek.

The community layout includes a store, clinic, education centre, youth centre, internet café/resource centre, entertainment centre, guest accommodation and sport areas. The community is adjacent to a large pastoral lease area.

It is envisaged that the income of the mechanical business will be derived in two ways.

Repairs and maintenance of the community’s equipment are chargeable to the community so this income is guaranteed. The potential to generate further business derives from any repairs and servicing of vehicles in the wider community and the sale of associated materials and services. There is also the potential for the establishment of a Vehicle Examination Centre.

Some capital may be required to take over the current stock and small tools.

A fully furnished house will be supplied to the successful applicant. Rent for the house and the workshop will be waived until such time as an adequate income stream is established.

This business will potentially suit a retired and/or adventurous person who has an interest in working in a remote community with people of Australian Aboriginal descent. A partner of this person, if not needed in the business, may be able to find alternative work in the community.

The applicant needs to be, or be eligible to be, the holder of a Western Australian Repairers Certificate.

Relevant experience in all aspects of the operation and management of a small business will be required. This will need to be combined with a positive motivation to be involved in the community.
