Australian Volunteers International partners with the Australian Government's new international volunteer program
26 May 2011
Australian Volunteers International has been announced as a core partner of the new overseas volunteering program which provides more opportunities for Australians to participate in international volunteering, in line with Australia’s aid program.
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd today launched Australian Volunteers for International Development.
The program is part of the Australian Government’s $55 million to commitment to international volunteering in 2011/12 and will see more than 900 volunteers on assignment in 33 countries in Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, as well as developing nations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The new program will be delivered by three core partners, Australian Volunteers International (AVI), Australian Red Cross and Austraining International in collaboration with AusAID.
Australian Volunteers for International Development draws all Australian Government overseas volunteering initiatives together under a single banner making it easier for more skilled Australians to contribute to our overseas aid efforts.
The Australian Government, through AusAID, is partnering with Australian Red Cross, Australian Volunteers International, and Austraining International - organisations with extensive experience in international volunteering – to provide a range of rewarding international development opportunities for Australians aged over 18.
These organisations place volunteers in assignments that are aligned with the aid priorities of the Australian Government and partner governments in developing countries.
AVI CEO, Dimity Fifer said the Australian Government had worked with AVI and supported international volunteering since 1965.
“AVI is looking forward to its continued work with the Australian Government through AusAID and meeting Australia’s aid objectives through the work of Australian volunteers,” she said.
“Australian Volunteers for International Development has embraced the true value of volunteering and is committed to a program based on partnership, mutual respect, supporting local development efforts and promoting global citizenship.”
