Australian Volunteers International will celebrate National
Volunteer Week (12-18 May), by providing Australians with up to 80
international volunteer opportunities to choose from as part of its
May recruitment drive.
According to AVI CEO Dimity Fifer, AVI needed Australians from a
range of professions to apply for volunteer positions, which ranged
from an organic farming program adviser in Jordan to a laboratory
technician in Papua New Guinea.
"In the May recruitment drive there is a growing number of
positions for community development workers in the areas of social
work, gender, psychosocial support and research; as well as for
health professionals, including nurses, obstetricians, pharmacists
and medical officers," she said.
"We also need accountants, fundraisers, human rights officers,
vocational trainers, teachers and boat builders."
As part of National Volunteer Week, Ms Fifer said, it was
important to recognise the major contribution, commitment and
enthusiasm of volunteers in Australia and overseas.
"Over 7000 Australians have volunteered with AVI in over 68
countries, and during National Volunteer Week, another 50
Australians about to go on assignment will participate in an AVI
three-day pre-departure briefing," she said.
"AVI's volunteers are recruited from across Australia, they are
all different ages, have a variety of skills and are all committed
to working with people from other cultures to deliver sustainable
positive change.
"Although, there are another 50 Australians about to go to work
in countries such as Syria, Solomon Islands and Lesotho, there is
still an enormous need for more skilled Australian professionals to
apply for an overseas volunteer assignment."
Australian Volunteers International's Recruitment Drive runs
from 10 May to 5 June 2008.
