Network Engineer/Technician – LAN/WAN – Design & Implement |

The mission of the PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR) is to improve the health and wellbeing of Papua New Guineans by conducting research on major medical and health problems in PNG that supports the development of health services.
To ensure this is successful, PNG Institute of Medical Research is seeking a volunteer with the skills to develop a wide area network linking all PNGIMR sites around the country so that information can be accessed by staff from different sites.
The volunteer will provide mentoring/ teaching and training for the local IT personnel to deal with rapidly emerging ICT technology.
To be successful in this role, the volunteer will need:
- A tertiary qualification in Information Technology or related area
- Experience in designing and developing area networking
- Experience in open source and vendor-specific software
- Demonstrated experience in network topologies and design, and network systems administration
Essential personal qualities include a commitment to taking responsibility for own behaviour, particularly in compliance with security guidelines and social, ethical and organisational norms and an ability to cope with cultural isolation and a different standard of living.
In addition to network engineering expertise, volunteers need skills in training and developing others, applied awareness and sensitivity to cross-cultural communication, patience, tolerance and flexibility. They manage with good humour the daily challenges of working with very limited resources.
