Position Description Community Health Mentor

• Take your skills to the Highlands of PNG
• Renowned women’s organisation

Susu Mamas was formed over 30 years ago to provide maternal and child health care to the women of PNG.

The maternal mortality and morbidity rate in Papua New Guinea is the second highest in the Asia Pacific region. This is due to many women not receiving optimal care, especially in rural areas.

In 2009 Susu Mamas received funding to expand services to the Morobe and the Western Highlands Provinces. These areas were selected due to the burden of HIV, maternal and infant mortality. Since then, it has become apparent that the new Provincial Team Leaders require support to establish and manage these services. The emphasis has been on supporting female Team Leaders to manage provincial teams.

A volunteer is now required to work alongside these women and to support the Team Leaders in managing and implementing appropriate changes to clinical services.

To be successful in this role, you will be a midwife or nurse with solid community health experience. You will have a background managing teams and providing clinical supervision.

Central to this assignment is the ability to cope with cultural isolation and a different standard of living, along with a preparedness to work with limited resources.
